FLUMINENSE BEAT MANCHESTER UTD IN PREMIER FINAL

PREMIER MILK CUP FINAL

Manchester Utd 1

Fluminense 2

A goal of stunning quality denied Manchester United a third Premier Milk Cup title at Coleraine last night.

Mauricio Peruchi ended the tournament on a high for fabulous Fuminense with a glorious goal in injury time.

For United it was a bitter pill to swallow after battling back from a goal down to level. At that stage they threatened to take control but the Brazilians came storming back and the winning goal from Peruchi was a wonderful strike.

Tournament chairman Victor Leonard had words of praise for both teams for serving up a showpiece that sparked into life in the second half and kept almost 4,500 fans gripped.

He said: “To have had a team of Fluminense’s quality here this week has been wonderful and they deserve their success, although it must be hard for Manchester United to take.”

The Brazilians had been subdued at the outset but still showed some of their class, while United seemed content to give them slight territorial advantage.

Fluminense flexed their muscles with an early miss when Dalton Neto flashed a header from a corner wide with the United defence static.

United lost Evandro Brandao to injury after only 14 minutes with Kieran Djialali taking the stage but the Red Devils couldn’t find a way to penetrate the Brazilians defence.

But the goal the game craved arrived after 23 minutes and it was hot shot striker Dori Nascimento who found the net with a powerful downward header to put away a cross from Mauricio Penuchi.

Fluminense should have went further in front six minutes later. Penuchi found space for himself in the box and saw his initial shot blocked. His follow up caught a defender and fell for Nascimento who inexplicably fired wide.

United sparked into life in the second half. Within six minutes Paul McGuinness’ side had levelled with defender Cameron Stewart winning the ball after four Fluminense players failed to clear the danger. He slipped a pass into the path of Daniel Welbeck who fired a shot past keeper Paulo Viegas.

The Old Trafford teenagers were lifted by that strike and Josh Craddock pinged a long range shot wide of the post as United began to make a real impression.

Walandy Costa tested keeper Thomas Cox with a free kick from 25 yards which Cox did extremely well to gather under the bar while under pressure.

Then Dori’s shot was cleared off the line by United defender Joe Dudgeon as the game began to stretch in the closing stages.

Fluminense substitute Ferreira Vicente’s vicious late connection crashed off a defender and before the end Dudu Tavares sent a shot wide. Peruchi missed a chanceas the clock ticked down but then he produced a moment of sheer class to unlock the United defence.

He collected a pass and left two defenders dizzy as he controlled the ball with his left foot and then the right before cutting a ground shot out of the reach of Cox with his wonderful left foot.

It was the perfect way to end the 25th anniversary tournament and Peruchi was the only choice for the man of the match award.

Que é isso? Sub-20? Alguma espécie de torneio "dente-de-leite"?
